Seriously? Are you serious? About 400 dollars a wheel for 18x8.5, so I got excited and thought 17x9 might be cheaper, nope. They are 150 more!!! Also, thoughts? I am pretty much split on this on whether it looks good or not.

apperently its harder to find more aggressive rubber for the 17'.
I say get the 18's

I am finding it to be pretty easy at least what I am looking at. They have Hankook RS3s in 17s plus they are much much cheaper! Plus 18s will slow the car down that already has a power deficit

tires are also something to sonsier, and the ride quality.
but also remember, a thinner tires has a shorter sidewall. so it will flex less in hard cornering and react to your steering input quicker as well.
it all boils down to choice. if the rubber u want is cheaper but like 10 bucks, then u save $40 per lets say 10,000km. is it worth it? is the power trade off worth it? (also, you might be surprised on weight. OEM wheels tend to be quite heavy and even if you move up a size you might still be saving wieght over OEM)

I want to say the OEM wheels are 21lbs, and these are 20lbs in 18x8.5 so I can assume the 17x9s will be around the same.
As for tires, I think they are about 2 to 300 dollars cheaper in 17s. I think Michelin Pilot Super Sports are 1200 in 18 but about 800 in 17. You save a lot!

so your more then save the money on the first set of tires.
then again, Ive seen this car on 18's, and (personally) they fill the wheel wells a little better then 17's
again, its all down to choice and what budget you have set yourself.
When I got the wheels for my mom' is250, I got Akita AK77's in OEM 17inch size.(parents wanted 17's, i pushed for 18's. didnt work) wheels + tires (I forgot what they were. but they were the quietest tire we could find) + TPMS sensor came out to about 1200. my mom regrets it, because the 17's just look sad (black wheels w/ red lip on black car)

18s will definitely look better no doubt about it, but 17s are smaller, so there is less rotational mass on the outside, and they are also lighter. Not to mention cheaper. . . usually. I however will not be adding TPMS sensors to the car to save some money.

I like.

They are obviously going to be black, for max street cred.

17x9? What size tire are you going to run? Anything more than 225 is OVERKILL on this car, it won't be the same.

get them. trust me, it is such a bitch to drive around with that fucking light on all the time

A 245. I know it is a bit overkill but one if you are not using factory size wheels then you are no longer in C-stock in autocross so I am going for STX which allows for a 9" wheel. And It looks much nicer. I think with these wheels and the tires I want the weight increase is 1lb per corner.

Googling found this .
18x8.5 for $383 v. 17x9.0 for $341

It's not only the weight increase, but your polar moment of intertia will increase, slowing down your turn-in, braking, and acceleration since all of the weight is farther away from the axis

Nice wheels too much stance
![]() 02/03/2014 at 09:19 |

any wheels bigger than 17 are just excess unsprung weight.

He's not tucking, so it's not stance. Just low.

I think a bigger size would look nicer, and since it's cheaper in this case, would make more sense.
No luck on the Watanabe suggestion from earlier?

These cars came with 17" wheels! Might go 16, but there is a lack of options in the rubber department, and the fact that a huge sidewall can lower turn-in. And I made sure to check, if you run a 245/40 your outer tire diameter is the same as stock!

Don't forget tires. 18" tires are expensive. That one inch makes a huge difference.

That's not too bad. I have seen worse.

Damn, not in a 5x100 pattern though.

Keep in mind that you may run a faster time once in a while with a smaller sidewall, but you'll run more consistent times with a larger sidewall. It's a tradeoff

The OG tires are a 215/45 and the ones I will be getting way off in the distance is a 245/40. So while the percentage of sidewall vs width is lower the sidewall is effectively the same size.

Oh! And no luck on te Watanabes they are out of price range and I don't think they come in the sizes I want.

I get that- I've been through this whole rat race with STX class before. I'm just saying if you decide to go down to a 16" wheel/tire combo, you'll get a comfier DD and run more consistent times. It's up to you. I eventually went with a 245/40/17 Pilot Super Sport on a heavier car (Legacy GT) just because I wanted a stiffer sidewall to prevent rollover. Sounds like you know what you're doing though

I kind of do, and kind of don't know what the hell I am doing. I know I need camber adjustment but don't know whether to get coilovers or just springs. The tires I want are not exactly the best tire for performance(They are Hankook V12s) but they are cheaper, like nearly half the price of Super Sports.

I ran Bilstein HDs with STI pink springs plus front and rear Hotchkis swaybars and my car handled beautifully. I don't know if they offer anything like the Bilsteins on the BRZ but I'd imagine you can get similar results with Konis. With a tighter suspension you're likely going to overwork those poor v12s like I did. After a run or two, my v12s got really hot and greasy and eventually just plowed, which really sucks when you ramp up to your last run and all your tires want to do is slide
![]() 02/03/2014 at 17:07 |

They have B8s for this car, and with springs, should be around 1200 and that is a good set of springs too. I might go that route, cause you don't have to buy it all at once. You can do it one at a time. I am going to need rear lower control arms though, get a few degrees of camber. As of now, I am just aiming for wheels. Next year I will probably start looking into it some more.
Also, how did you like the V12s besides performance driving.

Aside from autocrossing, the v12s were all I could really have asked for, for the price. The sidewalls did rollover a bit when you pushed them, but for everyday driving they did their job just fine. Dry or wet, they were great, no hydroplaning whatsoever. They do squeal quite a bit though, whether you like to know when you're approaching the limits or not. From the 3 sets of tires I ran in the summer, they returned the best gas mileage out of the 3, so that's a positive as well. Not the quietest tire in the world, but definitely not the loudest either- it wasn't so much rolling noise as it was noise from going over bumps and expansion joints. I could tell it was the tires because whenever I switched to my Blizzaks or M-PSSs, the noises got quieter. I think for the money, they're a great tire. I'd be interested to know how the Conti DWs would fare against the v12s though, since they cost about the same.

I won't be autocrossing every weekend, maybe once a month but usually twice or so. I know the stock tires are pretty much the worst things in the world. Terrible grip, terrible ride, terrible wet traction, terrible cold traction. Like there is no reason for anyone to get those tires.
I know Car & Driver did a tire test, and one of them might have been the DWs, I would go check out the review!
![]() 02/03/2014 at 23:38 |

I consulted that test when I went tire shopping, but eventually still went with the MPSS because everybody I talked to said they were the best DD/AutoX combo tire. DWs have notoriously floppy sidewalls and some quality control issues. It seems like you get what you pay for, but if you're only going to be doing it once in a while then you'll be fine with the v12s or DWs

Yeah, that is what everyone said to me too. As of right now though, 800 dollars is a lot to spend on tires. I am going to use the V12s until the die and then switch over to MPSS or do it next year some time.
